TV presenter Philippa Forrester, pictured left, opened the Spa Trail between Woodhall Spa and Horncastle earlier this year. The project was funded by a grant of £375,000 made by the European Development Fund to Lincolnshire County Council Waterways Partnership. This was secured thanks to a feasibility study undertaken by Transport Initiatives in 2008.
Tim Pheby, Rob Marshall and Ted Liddle surveyed the route in a very cold and icy February, reporting their findings in March. The report recommended that the section of the Spa Trail – a disused rail track bed – that was in public ownership should be resurfaced first. The existing surface was passable by mountain bike but prone to flooding in parts. A section of the route also goes through Woodhall Spa golf course.
