MARCH 2006 – TRANSPORT INITIATIVES UPDATE

Sally for CDT Coordinator !

Transport Initiatives member Sally Killips has been chosen by Cycling England to be the Cycle Demonstrations Towns Coordinator.  She will hold this post for two years and will be ensuring that the six Demonstration Towns of Aylesbury, Brighton, Darlington, Derby, Exeter and Lancaster really work at improving conditions for cycling. As Sally herself says, if cycling is to go anywhere in the near future “This has to work”.

Innovative Route in Lancashire

Transport Initiatives has just completed a contra flow scheme on a narrow village street for Lancashire County Council.  The official route in the opposite direction is the A6 which is unsuitable for children travelling to a primary school located on the street.  Narrow means down to three metres, so there is no room for a conventional lane.  The scheme uses a variety of methods to highlight the presence of cycles travelling in the unexpected direction.  Most of these were on the carriageway as in some cases the three metres of width was between high walls so signing could be expected to have a short life.

National Cycle Network in Rochdale

Following on from its last job with Rochdale, Transport Initiatives has produced a signing scheme for the Regional Route 92 of the National Cycle Network.  This part of NCN 92 runs though the back streets of inner Rochdale to link the Council’s Healey Dell route on a disused railway to NCN 66 on the Rochdale Canal.  Although Rochdale Council’s original idea was to sign it with fairly simple waymarks, Transport Initiatives persuaded them to think in terms of local destinations and making it the first stage of a signed route network.

No more hatching in Selby

Transport Initiatives were commissioned by Mouchel Parkman give advice on the feasibility of cycle lanes without a centre line on the A19 to the south of Selby Town Centre.  This will be used to help justify the proposal to North Yorkshire County Council.
